Grubb Family Beautifies Local Charity
The Bernie Lorenz Recovery (BLR) house, a program of MECCA Services,
has a long history of providing substance abuse and life skills
services to women in the community. The house and grounds, located on
Kingman Boulevard, are about to get a facelift. Plans are in the
works to build a serenity garden in honor of the late Kathy Grubb,
daughter of Jerry and Nancy Grubb. Jerry Grubb is generously donating
$5,000 to get the project started.
The Grubb Family of Des Moines has a long history with Bernie Lorenz.
Lois Ward, aunt of Kathy Grubb, is one of the original founding board
members.
After Kathy's passing in 2009, the Grubb family designated
memorial funds to be directed to BLR. The Grubb family is now taking
another step to support BLR with the creation of the garden.
Kim Grubb, sister-in-law of Kathy Grubb, said "Kathy loved to garden,
she loved flowers and she was a force with the Bernie Lorenz House
from the very start. We felt a garden at BLR would be a wonderful
place, and a fabulous tribute to a fabulous spirit, whom we miss every
day."
Kim Grubb and family have been busy rounding up volunteers for the
project which began this past weekend and will continue on Friday June
25th. Volunteers are rolling up their sleeves from
9am-3pm, cleaning up the grounds, planting flowers and plants, and
installing benches to create a serenity garden for the BLR clients to
enjoy.
Bernie Lorenz clients are joining in by preparing breakfast for the
volunteers. Lois Ward donating lunch for the workers.
Shannon
Wagner, MECCA Vice President of Community Affairs said "We are so
grateful to the Grubb family for their support of our mission at
Bernie Lorenz. The women we serve often come to us with little
or nothing. What a wonderful thing to have a beautiful,
reflective place for them as they work toward recovery."
The serenity garden is the first step in a long-term project designed
to beautify the entire grounds at BLR.
